Run an install of MacOS from External USB C Drive (Samsung T3)

Hello,

Has anyone here ran an install of MacOS from an External USB SSD. The one I'm looking at currently is the Samsung T3.

I received the new Macbook Pro as a gift and it was the base non touch model. (256gb). I love it, but I run some coding apps and such that kills the HD space. So I want to run maybe a to go dev environment with my tools in a separate install of macOS and run it from the usb c drive.

Will over heating and such kill this idea. (This is not my main environment and will be more for on the go and travel and such).

Thinking out loud and wondering if others here have done something similar.
