Run iMac off MBA in target disk mode

Is this possible and are there any downfalls? Instead of getting a Thunderbolt Display I figure I can use an iMac and get the added benefit of higher end graphics for gaming. If I can use target disk mode it'll save me from making sure files are sync'd between computers.
