Hello.

Recently I have been looking for an external monitor to use with my 13-inch rMBP (mid 2014). Sadly, as I discovered, there is no way to run 4k @ 60 hz with this machine. I was wondering if my MacBook does run WQHD at 60hz, or if I can buy a 4k display and run it at a lower resolution at 60 hz.

Can anyone tell me what is possible? And some recommendations for a monitor (27 inches).

WQHD should run fine.

You might have luck with running an external graphics card over Thunderbolt 2 and then plugging in 4K monitors to your heart’s content. I would do a bit of reading on your specific model before plunging on the buy.

Dell’s 4K monitors are terrific. They balance color accuracy, price, and quality well.

Here’s a setup I’m running on a 15” MacBook Pro, using 4K without issue.
