Apple's support documentation states that if the Mac was released before June 2013 (as my 2010 iMac 27" clearly is), then Apple Hardware Test should be used to run diagnostics on it by holding down the D key as the computer starts up (before the grey screen and chord sound).

For some reason this doesn't work on my iMac with Mountain Lion; holding down OPTION-D does. After selecting a language AHT promptly tells me that it does not support this machine. What gives?

Edit: after trying with the wrong installation disc, finally saw the error I had made (need to use the Application disc). Testing underway!
