I run marathons, and am thinking of trying some training based on my heart rate zones. I know there are heart rate zone apps, is there one go to app for this that everyone is using, or would I be better off getting a chest or arm strap, such as Polar H10 and using the app from that manufacturer?

I use the “WorkOutDoors” app with the Apple Watch. I also use the Scosche Rhythm 24. “WorkOutDoors” is the best app there is for all things running. I do a lot of low heart rate training for my ultra marathon races, and it alerts me audible as well as visually and haptically, when my heart rate gets above a number I set. It can do that for any heart rate zone amongst other things.

Thanks.

I came across WorkOutDoors today while researching this.

Do you use a Heart rate Mon tor strap or just use from the sensor on the apple watch?

I use the Scosche Rhythm 24 ( wear on forearm) paired with Apple Watch, while using the WOD app. Solid results. The Scosche has a 24 battery and you can manually adjust the zones on it as well as with WOD.

I use Workoutdoors and a Polar H10 chest strap.

I've never found the built in sensor to be particularly reliable when running either with my S3 or my S5 watches.

The sensor is pretty accurate on the series 5. The problem is it can spike for no real reason at the start of a run, or can get locked to the stride rate. If those two things don’t happen, I have found it accurate within a best or two of Scosche or a Polar. I got tired of the aforementioned bugs and went with Scosche for my training runs.
