Running Non-HiDPI resolutions

I'm finding 1440X900 too limiting on this 12" screen, and would like to run it at something higher, preferably 1920x1200 (not supported by Display Menu), but possibly at 2048x1280 (Display Menu supported). What I'd like to know simply is:
1. Does this hurt clarity of text (I'm fine with the size, and can upsize menus and text as I like - going smaller on 1440 isn't enough)?
2. Does this hurt battery life?
