I'll preface this with, yes, I searched, here and on Google and on Cydia. I won't say I didn't somehow miss something though, which is why I'm asking. :D

There are some sounds the iPhone makes that don't have a switch option in Settings. Two in particular that bug the hell out of me are the swoosh sound when sending texts, and the docking sound made whenever you plug the phone in. Prior to upgrading from 4.0 to 4.2.1 today, I'd somehow managed to eliminate both of those, but after restoring with PkgBackup and doing all the manual tweaks I'd written down, I still have those sounds active. I have no idea how I got rid of them before; I usually document that all that stuff, but either I didn't, or it happened through some bug or accident.

I've downloaded the trial of ToneFXs 2.0, but it doesn't affect the sent text sound at all, and $5.00 just to turn off the charging chime is a bit much--especially when that doesn't always work, and so far, it doesn't. It's got great features, I just wouldn't use them.

So--are there tweaks or themes (paid or free) out there that I'm missing that would handle this? Or is the only option to SSH in and remove or replace these sounds with some "silent" tone?

(ip4, 4.2.1/1.5.9, Winterboard, BiteSMS, bunch o' other stuff)

find the sounds you want to replace on your phone, and copy them to your computer (just in case).

use this, rename it for each sound you want to replace.

that's what i did; and no whooshs, etc (for email, messaging...)

+1 to this advice your just replacing the current sound with a silent .caf file with the same name

if you want to do it via winterboard so you not effecting the default file make a folder call it silent theme or something you want then in there make a folder called UISounds then in this folder put all your "silent".caf files naming them whatever system sound your changing using the list of files names posted above

exactly! i actually just replaced the defaults, i NEVER want a sound for outgoing texts (for example), but safe is always a good thing too...

Thanks for all the advice, it's hugely helpful. Sounds like Winterboard is the way to go then, in part because I want to get away from having too many manual tweaks to make just so I can upgrade. Being able just move a theme in and respring will make this easier next time around.

Again, thanks so much!

FYI: Deleting or changing the name of the Video & Audio Start/End sounds will cause Video & Sound recording from default apps to lock up. Basically it will not work. Doing so to the Camera Shutter sound is perfectly fine tho. I usually just put "12345" and the end of a file name to disable a sound.

I've had no problems changing the SMS, Camera shutter, and Voicemail sounds. I'm going to try the Email tone next.

begin_video_recording.caf

If you use sweep (sweep.sourceforge.net) (it is in the ubuntu repos) you can silence the audio in the begin_video_recording.cad file and keep the phone from making any sound at all when you begin a video recording.

i know this is an old thread but it is worth noting for the caf files, just rename it to the something like photoShutter.caf and then type touch photoShutter.caf. So the file is there, but its a blank file. Been doing this since iPhone 4 without any consequence and therefore I do not need my phone to be silent. I do this mainly for screenshots since I take a LOT of screen shots its annoying to hear the shutter for that. The temporary "flash" is all I need to know it worked or not.
