Running snow leopard from external hard drive

Hi, I'm installing snow leopard onto an external hard drive and hope to work from that OS in the future.

I'm wondering if my data on leopard will move across into snow leopard, or if i will have to keep switching between my internal and external hard drive?

Also, at the moment I run my itunes and iphoto from my external hard drive to conserve memory on the computer, will this continue to work once i've installed snow leopard?

Would it be wiser to buy another external hard drive to run snow leopard on? And would my relocated itunes/iphoto be able to work from a separate hard drive?
