When I received my Power Mac Quad, I've noticed some brown substace which looked like rust on the front of the case. But, it appears this stuff can be wiped off with moderate force. Most of it is gone now but theres still a little left right now. Here are some pictures:

I would guess it's from some rusty straps or binds that were holding the computer or the case in place during manufacturing or packing...as far as I know the computer is cased in aluminum, which doesn't rust...

If it's rust, that means it must have been in contact with water. That means I would send it back rather than scrape it off. Is there any rusty surface on the inside? Perhaps the metal came in contact with water before it was assembled. Call up Applecare and discuss your issues with them.

Looks to me like some kind of marking pen/pencil, judging from the way it's all in a sort of line/dot configuration. Applecare techs will be able to tell you what it is.

(I just hope they weren't marking it as a defective model...)

How can it be rust? It is an aluminium case and red rust as you are proposing is an iron salt caused by the oxidation of iron (ie Fe2O3) alumininium (or aluminum as americans would prefer) oxidises on contact with air to promote a grey (hense invisible) film and everybody out there has an aluminium oxide layer on the outside of their case.

The only thing i can think of is some rub of from something that was rusty or a redy cryon marker etc

The case is aluminum and not iron, and your back should be happy for that. Aluminum doesn't rust per-say in the way that you think of with iron, but it does oxidize... however, oxidized aluminum just has a VERY thing clear layer over the metal that is barely noticeable and that layer protects any further oxidization from occurring.

Aluminum is nice
