Safari 13.1 hangs

Updated Safari this morning on my MBP running High Sierra 10.13.6 (17G11023). Now I get browser freezes while viewing CNN page on Facebook. Mouse arrow moves, but the window is not responsive. Activity Monitor shows a Safari 13.1 process using 200% cpu causing fans to run at full speed.
 
i am getting a lot of safari freezes for many months on a lot of different web pages like gmail.
i have 2018 macbook pro 15 inch with catalina but i think this issue has been happening at least since mojave
haven't found a fix yet. i have Safari Version 13.1.2 (15609.3.5.1.3)
