Apple today released the Safari 26 beta, allowing macOS Sequoia and macOS Sonoma users to download the browser and get the new Safari 26 features.

Safari 26 adds support for HDR images, SVG icon support, additional tracking protection, and more, with some of the most interesting new features listed below.
  • HDR image support
  • SVG icon support
  • Support for reporting a website compatibility issue
  • Option for preventing fingerprinting for known tracking scripts
  • Filters out tracking parameters for links in regular browsing mode
  • Option for showing extension keyboard shortcuts in Settings and support for customization
  • WebGPU support
More on everything that's new in Safari 26 can be found on Apple's website.

If you are beta testing iOS 26, iPadOS 26, visionOS 26, or macOS Tahoe, you already have Safari 26 as it is included with the updates.

thanks for correcting that information
I am on Safari 26 beta on macOS 15.6 Sequoia but will be downgrading as there is a big lag when opening a new tab and you begin immediately typing (iMac M3 10-core CPU/24 GB RAM) which never happened on the stable release. Too much of an annoyance to keep it - but can confirm compact tabs are still there. In fact the whole UI except for the new tab drop down/suggestions is identical)

Tabs are still there, but you cannot close them by clicking the dot, you have to use ⌘ W, nor can you click into the search bar to type.

I'm pretty sure thats a bug, on the current release of Safari Technology Preview the same thing happens, I create a new tab and it won't let me click on the address bar to enter a URL, so there is literally no way to navigate anywhere. I quit and re-open and then it works as it should

The address bar is unusable when a website is opened in compact tab view but tabs can be closed with right click menu. And new tabs can be opened with the + in the upper right corner. Technology Preview is not affected. @CheesePuff

It has the bug at least since Beta 3 and 15.7 RC2+3. I read it in another thread. Don't know for other versions. I have installed Beta 1 in 15.6 shortly before 15.7 RC1 had been released. I never used the Compact Tab view. I only tested it, when someone mentioned the bug, who also had 15.7 and Beta 3 installed.

Safari 26 Beta 4 for Sonoma (14.6 and higher):

(Don't know if it has the bug)

Safari 26 Beta 4 for Sequoia (15.4 and higher):

both released August 19, 2025

Technology Preview 225 without compact tabs bug, released August 6, 2025 but has newer Webkit build number. Looks like 18.6 in the Extensions section that changed with version 26.0 Beta:

Only available for Sequoia.

Since the latest beta for Safari 26, the bookmarks side bar, has been overhauled, and the once simple task of ordering websites, and collapsing folders has been replaced with a nice looking, but useless sidebar view.

Safari 26 Beta - Bookmarks sidebar.jpg

Is the same for macOS Tahoe. Tempted to download the Tech Preview Safari instead.

Surprised no one else has had this issue. I decided to do a a full erase, and reinstall. With most of my stuff online, it takes 1 hour to reinstall, and another 30 mins to configure to my specs. I had been doing some python learning, and had a few python apps etc on my MBP, so good way to rid myself and clean up the system.

There are not many people interested in Betas for Sequoia anymore, 15.7 RC4 had been released today.

I don't use the sidebar and Safari is not even my main browser. The latest Technology Preview 226 got the same compact tab view bug by the way. But the sidebar looks different, there are no images of recently added bookmarks and the folders all have just the same folder icons.
