Safari 3 not downloading

Lately safari has not been downloading when i click on items that should download. Normally i just choose download attached file, and it works fine. I ran into a problem where the apple download page for safari 4 the link to download the file isn't actually a direct download. Please help, I'm tired of this little maneuver, and also i would like safari 4
