Safari 4 As Low-End Video Player

Whilst on a thread over at macintoshgarden, checking out a low-end video site one user has launched, Cornica I found that on my G3 iMac, videos I'd transcoded (Cinepak and Sorenson 3) actually played with great efficiency - as measured in menumeters and Terminal/top, when dropped into Safari than in QuickTime.
Safari uses QuickTime for playback but somehow is able to outpace the QuickTime player itself - an interesting and unexpected alternative.

This Cornica concept reminds me of a similar project some enthusiasts put together back in the day for watching YouTube videos on a Nintendo DSi via its Internet Browser, which never had the native capability.
