Safari 5.1 beachball, wont open new windows, wont open new tabs. Locked out really

Anyone else having Safari 5.1 issues? I've tried all the tricks (I think) and it just won't work anymore. I shouldn't have updated I guess. Resorted to Chrome cos' I simply can't work it out.

Did you have a working network connection when this happened? Your problem is typical of the wifi bug in Lion with safari 5.1 just crashing when it is waiting on response from a down network.

No I have wifi off, running through Ethernet. Wifi on my MacBook Pro has connection issues. I am running the latest Snow Leopard anyway. This Safari issue only came about with the 5.1 update. If I knew how to revert back to the previous version I'd try it out. I miss Safari on the Mac.
