I emptied (on advice of a person at the Apple Store) the cache of Safari 5.1.5 and now when I log in (Facebook, for example), Safari won't ask to remember the log-in information. This is not true of all sites. MacRumors works ok. Advice please. Thanks.

Emptying the cache will have no effect on stored passwords. To access passwords, go to Safari > Preferences > AutoFill > User names and passwords

I do that, but when I log in to Facebook, Safari does not ask to remember the login information.
Try removing the stored password from Safari and from Keychain and clear all your Safari cookies. Then it should prompt to save it again.
