Safari 6 search bar doesn't search

My Safari 6 has suddenly stopped doing any searches from the search bar. I enter something, press return and nothing happens. Even choosing an item listed in the Google search area of the suggestions box that pops up does nothing. Changing to Yahoo or Bing doesn't help.

Any ideas????
