safari access

I have just got a 1.1.4 unlocked O2 iphone and am using it in italy on the vodafone network. I can use everything but cannot access the internet thru the mobile network, wi-fi is no problem. can anybody help?? A friend has 1.1.3 and using it on the TIM network here and he access safari immediately! driving me mad!! I have put in the SIm from my blackbury, that accessed the internet immediately!!
