No matter how many times I change my preferences, Safari always reverts to saving downloads to the desktop, rather than where I want them. I have a 2x 2.5GHz PM with 1.5GB RAM and OS X 10.3.5. Has anyone the same problem and, more importantly, a solution? I never have this problem on my G4 PB 12" (or the PB 17" for that matter).

Have you tried deleting your preferences file and then re-entering the new download folder?

make sure the folder in which you're saving downloads to is owned by yourself and you have read/write access to it, otherwise it will revert to saving to the desktop.

The folder is ok - I have checked (it is a folder called "Downloads in my home folder). Which preferences file should I delete (I presume it is the Safari prefs file, but where is it found?)
Thanks

Try deleting these:

~/Library/Caches/Safari
~/Library/Safari/Downloads.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist

Then log out, and back in.

Thank you all - seems to work perfectly now. I suspect the problem was in the transfer of all files from my Powerbook to the new PowerMac.
