Safari and Downloads

I hate having the downloads window open with every download. Is there a way to make it not open? And maybe replace it with something that shows the download status at the bottom of the Safari window instead?

I started using Lion and Safari 5.1, and it handles downloads just like I want. It has a little icon in the upper right corner and it shows the status without opening a new window. I guess I just have to wait for Lion to be released.
