OK, I've turned off all auto-fill as far as I can tell for suggestions but still every time I type news I get a spam site news.com.com instead of news.bbc.co.uk that I visit all the time.

Anybody got an idea what's going on here as it's really annoying? It sometimes goes away and for a good while it will still go news.bbc.co.uk but it's pretty persistant now.

It's likely your search engine supplying you with a 'top hit'.
You can check the preferences on the search engine you use
Clearing out all your cookies can help which maybe why it goes away sometimes but it's the way search engines work. They make money on advertising and that means sending you to sites. I have the same problem with 'daily motion' which I've never visited on purpose but any search beginning with a 'd' is likely to load daily motion first.
The best thing is just to use a bookmark of the site you want rather than searching.

Yeah the odd thing is that I turned off search engine suggestions.. in fact everything in the search tab is turned off.

I've also cleared caches and cookies but it seems to come back.

I had the same problem. Turns out I had an old lingering bookmark that was pointing to an old CNET URL that was news.com.com. I guess they abandoned it since it now redirects to something else.
Once I got rid of the bookmark my problem disappeared. I haven’t really used bookmarks in years so I haven’t been maintaining them. Who needs bookmarks when you can clutter your browser with unlimited tabs?
