Safari automatically clears downloads despite being set to manual

In preferences, I set safari to clear my downloads manually but it still clears it automatically. I've already tried reinstalling Safari 4 but the problem just cropped up again a week later.

Is this a virus or something?

I've been having the same problem recently as well. I mean its not that bad, just more of an inconvenience to have to go to the download folder to find your downloads rather than just clicking on them, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
