Safari Beta 4 Tab Behavior

Does anyone know how to force Safari beta 4 tabs to open in the background? Whenever I open a new tab from google reader, using the v shortcut, safari automatically switches to that tab. Does anyone know how to change this?

Make sure the middle box is unchecked.

It is unchecked but when I open a window in google reader using keyboard shortcuts the new window becomes active.

Any ideas? Again this is only happens when using google reader. Most other new tabs open in the background.
