I have some bookmarks and folders in the bookmarks bar and I'm trying to open them in new tabs. The regular bookmark links work fine but the ones grouped together in the folders don't open in new tabs whether middle clicking with my mouse or using the keyboard.

Any ideas?

Are you trying to open a single bookmark from the drop down list in a new tab or do you want all bookmarks to open simultaneously in separate tabs? :)

Single bookmark from the dropdown list in a new tab. Currently, it's just opening in the tab thats open.

I use the Bookmark Bar, but not tabs, so I'm not much help either. But I'm seeing what the OP sees. If I command-click on a link in the Bookmark Bar, it opens in a new tab. If I command-click on a folder in the Bookmark Bar, it opens all of the bookmarks in that folder in separate tabs. If I first click the folder to bring up links inside it, then hold command and click on the desired link, it opens in the current tab.

It's not the way I do things, but I can see how it would be frustrating if you wanted to do it that way. Not sure if there's a reasonable workaround other than d wade's suggestion of opening the new tab manually first and then clicking on the link...a pain in the patootie.

Seems to me like it's something worthy of a bug report.

Command-clicking a bookmark results in a new tab being created for the resulting link. command-clicking a bookmark within a folder on the bookmark bar does NOT result in a new tab being created for the resulting link.

Definitely worth a report.

Along the same lines:
Command-clicking a form submit button displays the response in a new tab
Command-return in the address bar opens a URL in a new tab
Command-return in the Google field opens a new tab with your search results
Command-clicking a bookmark in the Bookmarks menu in the menubar opens it in a new tab.

this is just not consistent

I've since reported this as a bug. Feel free to submit bug reports from the Safari menu -> Report Bugs to Apple. The more attention this gets, the greater probability that the issue will be fixed.
