Safari browser freezing issues.

So every so often Safari will freeze on me when I do a swipe gesture on my trackpad to go to the previous page. The page moves slightly but then freezes leaving a strip of white down the left side of the browser window (see pic below). It effects all open tabs. If I reopen a tab or window I can still use the back/forward buttons at the top left. At the same time I also get the issue of scrolling up and down with the trackpad as well. But I can use the up and down keys on the keyboard. Anyone else have this issue and know of a resolution?? I'm running Safari 7.1.7
