"Safari can't find the server."

I've been getting this error frequently and seemingly at random. What is strange about it is that the connection still works for other sites. Frequently, the site that won't load in Safari will load in Chrome. Eventually, the site in question does load in Safari as well, usually takes 30 seconds to a minute for it to start working again.

Has anyone experienced this issue or have a clue as to what is going on with Safari???

I'm still not 100% certain if this is unrelated to Safari, but maybe the behavior I'm seeing could be this:

My computer isn't infected as far as I can tell, but maybe the internet is acting up because of this?

I just had this happen again in Safari. So I switched over to Firefox and the site came up. I went back to Safari, no dice. Back to Firefox, site still works... After about a minute Safari started working.

What is the deal? Safari doesn't like the OSX Firewall?

HTTPS problems, perhaps?

I just posted about https problems, which seem to be occurring with my computer, although my symptoms seem very similar to yours. I kept switching back and forth between Firefox and Safari yesterday, getting erratic responses, and finally isolated the problem as being with https sites. For instance, I can access http://google.com, but not https://mail.google.com. Could that be what's happening to you?

At first I was sure that it was the malware you refer to, but I'm green, too. There's no way this could be blocking all https sites, is there?

Solution

Just wanted to say that my problem was with my ISP. They reset my modem, and that seems to have fixed the problem, although they wanted to blame it on Mac OS. I did worry that there was something amiss with the security protocols on the Mac, so I was relieved. As usual, my Apple worry is unfounded.
