safari cant read gmail

Nope, fine here. Safari Version 2.0.4 (419.3)

i can't even log into my gmail account with safari (must use camino). For some reason I get the beach ball of death, then the fans go crazy, and everything slows down until I have to force quit....grrrr....I also noticed that Safari becomes a RAM hog (taking up 200+MB). what gives? clearing cache and resetting safari doesnt work either...
