I am just about ready to pull my hair out here.

Safari crashes at least a half-dozen times on my laptop each day. I can find no specific cause for it. It's not a specific type of website that does it, nor does it seem to be any particular plug-in (flash, etc.) that's causing the problem.

Is anyone else having this problem? What is it?

Even worse - about 1/3 of the time, the crash nukes some of my prefs and resets Safari. All of my bookmarks are left untouched, but all of the default Apple bookmarks are slapped on to my bookmarks bar and my homepage is changed back to livepage.apple.com. Really, really annoying.

What's up with this?

try repairing permissions, and if you haven't restarted the computer do that, or you also could use a different browser.

There's a difference between plugins (Flash, Java, etc...) and the InputManager-or-similar hacks that are often called plugins. Have you checked both? The latter really seems to be the #1 cause of Safari crashes these days.
