Everytime i try to download any .dmg file through safari it crash and i get the standard message coming up about it crashing. but if i ctrl+click and then go on download linked file it works fine. can anyone think what is causing this problem?

That's strange.
You may have to delete some of Safari's preference files, but for now lets go through the basics.
Launch it and click on Safari. From that menu, choose Reset Safari. Report results here.
