i don't know what i did but when i go to the bookmark Icon and open up folders i get a black background -- how can i change that to all text -- i had it before but now its black and hard to see the bookmarks that i have marked

There should be 3 small horizontal lines on the bottom of the "black part." Click, hold and drag up to partition the screen between the text list of bookmarks and the visual list.
 
...and if it seems to stop halfway up, you can keep dragging to make the black part even smaller, so small that it disappears. But it leaves a gray bar behind so you can drag that back down if you want to.
