I'm having a severe hanging issue with Safari (Version 16.3 (18614.4.6.1.6)) on MacOS 13.2.1. Both when trying to initial connect to any website, or if on a website, when pressing the back arrow to return to the previous website.

On the initial connect, the little blue line indicating progress goes about 1/5 of the way, then just sits for 5-10 seconds, THEN I get to the website.

When clicking on the back button to go to the previous URL...most of the time, the click does nothing...it just sits there, never goes anywhere. If I click a few times, it MIGHT go back, or I can get the list of previous websites and click on the one I was just on, and then it will finally go there.

This happens on both my iMac and MacBook Pro, but...not on my iPhone...

I've had these issues for the last several years, but with this latest version...seems much worse than ever. I do not have EITHER issue when using MS Edge or Google Chrome, and I know one of the answers is to just start using them, but...is there anything I can do to prevent this hanging or complete inaction--it's kinda driving me crazy.

Thanks!!

I just came here to post the exact same question. Seems since I upgraded to Ventura, I have the same issue you describe. I've had the issue before Ventura, but lately it seems to have gotten worse and more frequent. If I have a few tabs already open with websites loaded, those sites function fine, but if I try going to a new site in a new tab, sometimes it will just hang and the only fix is to restart the computer. On a fresh restart, all seems to work as it should - for a while. Eventually it will start hanging again and the progress bar does as you describe and the new page will not load. I will call Apple support and, if they have any suggested fixes, I'll report back.

Hmm. I'm on Safari 16.3 under OS 12.6.3 and I've had an issue that sounds similar. Most of the time everything's fine, but occasionally (it might be once a fortnight) Safari will give the little blue underline and not load a site. Existing connections such as games or streaming video continue to work, but Safari won't connect to sites for a minute or two. I can work around the problem immediately by toggling between network locations, and other computers on the same network are still functional while the problem occurs.

Does that sound like the same problem or a different one?

Safari has been hot garbage for a few years now and Apple clearly doesn't care. Not just the same bugs over and over and backward UX decisions. Almost every other browser outperforms it, if you wish to stay away from Chromium forks, either Firefox or even Orion (webkit) in beta are a better choice.

Same issue seen here. With/without private relay. Always specific to a tab, though later another tab can also lockup. Safari/firefox don't seem affected. Continues to happen even on current Sonoma betas

This symptom happens since ios4, yes “4” . Back button in safari often hang, only way to fix is reload or open new tab. And apple never fix it. I don’t know why.
