Safari help, can you pause a download?

Hi, im trying to download a large file in safari, can you pause it and resume it later. Theres an "x" which you can click but it seems to stop it, then when you set it off again it seems to download from the start again.

there is normally a pause button next to the stop button... that will pause it for you..

it ultimately depends on the server if you can continue downloads or not..
