Safari History Deleting History

I know this topic has been posted, but I believe I am following the instructions correctly and it won't work. The search bar still shows previous visited sites. These are sites that were never visited on the phone either. Can someone tell me the correct the steps and elaborate, some say click the safari and then the next step is go to settings, but do I need to exit the safari first or what? I guess I'm retarted and need more elaboration PLEASE!

Go to Settings, then tap on Safari, then tap on "Clear History." This should work. Cheers.
