I accidentally typed in a wrong address into Safari and it went to what seems to be a phishing site with a pop-up window indicating I received a virus and I need to click on OK to proceed. I am unable to access History to delete everything in the browser, I am only able to quit Safari and when I re-open it I receive the same pop-up.

What can I do?

Thanks.

Try force quiting Safari and reopen while holding the shift key to prevent reopening the window. It's probably a java script exploit.

You can google for other options as well as downloading MalwareBytes and scanning your Mac.
