I never quite realised just how memory hungry Safari actually is.
The screenshot below is from iStat Menus and shows both Safari and Firefox open but with no windows loaded (i.e. I opened both browsers then Cmd + W to close the window but leave the program running in the background).
What is Safari doing with all that memory it's hogging?

Most of it is cached stuff, so don't bother, since the memory would be released if necessary. "... with no windows loaded" is incorrect. Closing a window does not release memory (unless there is high memory pressure) – only closing the browser via Quit releases the memory.

Btw: I get roughly 200 MB memory usage after opening Safari (with Google as initial page). Then opening MacRumors adds another 500 MB !!!
