I've searched google for a solution to this and I came across some and followed the instructions (reset safari, clear cache, run onyx, repair permissions). It works... for about two hours, then safari is back to lagging like crazy.

I'm using a late 2008 MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and all the latest software updates.

Does anyone know what the heck is going on and how I can fix it so it doesn't come back?

It isn't isolated to any one site in particular.

But a few that I frequent are:

facebook.com
hookahpro.com
royalhookahforum.com
thephotoforum.com
twitter.com
macrumors.com
appleinsider.com
stumbleupon.com

I'm sure there are more, but those are the sites that I make rounds on daily. All of those, among others, suffer from the lag. When it's lagging, it's usually affecting most sites, but sometimes when it's lagging other sites are fine.

No ideas?

It's pretty bad and none of the instructions on the web seem to be helping anything. Restarting Safari usually helps for a few minutes, then it's lagging again. When it gets bad, it's almost unusable. The whole application lags. Even, opening and closing tabs.

Do you have any plugins installed? If yes, deactivate them and see if it improves.

If not, try removing the com.apple.Safari.plist file from ~/Library/Preferences.

If nothing works, try reinstalling Safari.
