safari keeps taking over as default browser

Every time I restart my computer safari has reset itself as the default browser. When I click on a link in mail, safari launches. I prefer Chrome. I have done some searching and there was a similar problem back in 2008 or so but it had to do with Filevault, which I don't use. There are also a couple of threads on the Apple Support forum but they never got resolved.

I am running Lion 10.7.1 on my late 2009 i7 iMac

anyone running Lion having this problem?
