Safari locks up on opening a new tab

Over the last couple of weeks Safari has been sticking when I try to open new tabs either by double clicking in the tab bar or on the plus sign in the tab bar. It looks like this to iStat menus:

That's a good <10 second hang just to open a new tab. I've tried everything I can think of. Is there anything I can do?
