Safari: no progress indicator when using search

When I do a Google search by typing in words to the address field, there is no blue progress indicator along the bottom (which shows up when I click on a link to go to a website or when I type in a web address). Is there a setting I'm missing or is this the intended behavior? I hope it's not the latter, because it makes it seem like nothing is happening
