everytime i click on preferences in safari... i only get a box that says 'tabs'
and has 3 options for tabs... i want safari preferences! what do i do??

You don't have options along the top for the other preference categories?

If you log in as a different user, do you have the same problem?

haha.. no, of corse there isnt any tabs across the top of the window. i checked before i posted the thread.. haha

and there is only 1 user.

and there is only 1 user.

Create another user and check...it only takes a minute. I suspect it's a corrupted preference file that's the problem, which should only affect one user. This will confirm that.

Of course, I don't know which preference file that would be. It's probably <username>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist, but I don't know for sure. And it holds a lot of information, so if you delete it, you'll probably have to fix a lot of things. You can try dragging that to your Desktop and relaunching Safari. If it fixes the problem, you'll have to redo all of your setting for Safari. If it doesn't, you can drag the old one back in there and we can figure out something else to try.

i dont know how to delete the preference thingo.. and what is little snitch?

OK, well, if you don't know what LittleSnitch is then you are probably fine in that regard.

As for the preference...

~/Users/[YourUserName]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist

No, don't trash it completely just yet. As I mentioned in my previous post, now try opening Safari and see if the problem is gone. It will notice the missing preference file and create a new one. If the problem is gone, you can then empty your Trash to get rid of the corrupted one. If the problem persists, put the old one back and check back in here.

Yes, making sure that Safari is quit. Then, after the bin is emptied, just restart Safari.

I disagree. Moving the .plist file anywhere outside of the Preferences folder (such as to the Desktop or to the Trash) renders it invisible to Safari, so it's the same as deleting it entirely. But by not emptying the Trash, the file continues to exist and you can put it back to its original location if need be.

Edit: Well, if it's fixed now, that's great. Now you can empty the Trash. ;) :D

Thanks guys, you solved my problem with the missing preferences tabs!!

By the way you do not even need to move the plist file. just change the ".plist" extension to ".pist" or anything else equaly silly and leave the file in place. First close Safari then rename the file extension then reopen Safari and quick as a flash a new plist file appears next to the renamed one.
