I don't know if it was all the way back with Safari 3 that things worked as I wanted them to, but now with Safari 4.0.4 on OS X 10.6.2 trying to scale web pages for printing is less than optimal for reducing paper.
When I go to scale a page to print on fewer pages, usually a print-optimized version of an article or something without a fixed width, the right margin keeps getting bigger the lower and lower I scale. This leaves lots of room on the right side where text could easily reflow and fill in the gap. See the attachment for an example of all the paper space not used at 70% scaling.
Safari used to reflow this text, but the newest version does not. Does anyone know any information about this or a workaround?
