Safari problems: slow, and now my bookmarks have disappeared. WTF?

Hi, I have an iPad 1 with iOS4 and until recently have been just loving it.

Problem #1: Just over the last few weeks, it's been running really slow, especially when using Safari to browse the web.

Problem #2: Two days ago my Safari bookmarks suddenly disappeared from the iPad. They are still on the iMac and the iPhone, just not the iPad. I am a MobileMe customer and have not yet gone to iCloud (waiting for bugs to get resolved).

What could be causing these problems and can you suggest any fixes?
