Safari quits when trying to open a PDF link

Every time I click a link that takes me to a pdf my safari browser quits.
I think this issue started when I updated leopard to version 10.5.3

I can download the pdf if I right click the link and choose download but when I use the build in pdf viewer, saafri quits.

Any thoughts on how to resolve this pretty annoying issue?
