Over the last couple of weeks I have found that when I'm using Safari and try and move to a secure server connection, e.g. for payment details, I get the following error message:

Safari can’t open the page “https://www.????.com/default.asp” because it couldn’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.????.com”.

I can use the Mac version of IE but why can't I do this in Safari and why has it started happening in the last couple of weeks?

I'm running an iMac on OSX 10.3.9, with Safari version 1.3.2.
