Safari slides to the right and disappears

When I have Safari open and want to open a 2nd app such as Word, when I open the 2nd app Safari slides to the right of the screen and disappears. When I close the 2nd app, then Safari reappears. It slides back to the desktop. I want both apps to be open at the same time, one on top of the other. How do I prevent Safari from moving??
