hi all,

couldn't find anythingusing the search, so...

I am using Safari for many years now, and I pretty much like it.

But there is a strange problem, where I am failing to find the root cause or pattern: On some pages, when I enter the URL + ENTER, Safari starts "loading" and the progress bar goes like the first 10% or so, but then nothing happens. Either for a long time and then it loads the page, or it forever stays this way.

The second (re)"load" often happens in the usual and expected speed; also, loading that page with e.g. ORION or FIREFOX doesn't show that behaviour.

I tried:
- switch off PiHole, no help
- monitor network (Safari Dev Console), it shows NOTHING being requested or transferred during that interval
- cleared cache etc. no change
- identify a website where this happens more often or regular --> not possible, it seems very random

My guesses now goes in the directon of certificate validation, so before establishing a connection, Safari might try to validate certs, which then takes any amount of time & is not observable by me. Could that be the case?

Anyone else seeing this behaviour?

How could I further drill down / debug, in case it happens again?

Does anyone know any websites, where you experience the same?

Setup: MBP M1 Max, most current macOS & Safari, no significant plugins, network OK so far.

Cheers
M

First, try disabling Settings > Apple Id > iCloud > Private Rely.

You can also try enabling the developer tools in Safari with Safari > Settings > Advanced > check the 'Show features for web developers'. This should add a "Develop" menu item in the menu bar. Select Develop > Show Web Inspector. When the Web Inspector panel appears, select the "Network" tab. Recreate the "slow load" page issue and watch the "Time" column. My guess is there is slow DNS resolution loading resources on the web page. Sometimes the "Timelines" tab is interesting to observer as well.

relay is disabled

I was already quoting from the network tab in the developer menu / web inspector, see above: there is simply no entry for the time it "hangs", like 10-20 seconds.

DNS is fine, at least there is no delay as far as I can tell.

I've seen this myself.
I notice it especially when I switch on my VPN (from having it switched off).
First page I try to access seems to "get stuck".

The solution is easy (once you get used to it):
Close the page, then...
Reload the page.
Done.

Here's Fishrrman's "Mac Rule Number 2":
Use what works for you. Don't waste your time trying to use what doesn't.

haha that's a nice rule, for life :)

but, of course, I would like to know what is going on here, since it maybe relevant for other technical issues as well.

The workaround also works for me, most of the times, but this is really annoying an shouldn't happen.

So I am still hoping that some experts know the real cause behind this.

i dont know what causes it either but i assume it has something to do with private relay because it doesn't happen on my home wifi (private relay doesn't work with my home wifi).
sometimes when i try 'show IP address' from the webpage menu it will reload straight away
