[Safari] Strange Youtube behavior?

In Safari, when I go to Youtube and click on the video I want to watch I can't watch it because I don't have Flash installed, I refuse to use it or even download it. If I right click on the video and choose "open in new window" it plays just fine. How is that possible with no flash installed and Youtube HTML5 mode is off.
