Safari tabs not showing notifications

Hi guys, new here so be nice :)

I've recently migrated from chrome to safari as Chrome was doing my head in. I'm liking it so far, the only thing I have an issue with is the fact that my tabs don't show facebook/twitter notifications. For example chrome used to come up with a (1) if I had a new one or 'xxx has messaged you' if I had a new message. Is this not a feature of safari or can I enable it somehow?

Any help would be great
