I open 4 gmail tabs and another tab for browsing. I know gmail is eating a lot of RAM in both Safari and Chrome - but I consider my task is light compared to those who likes to open tens-hundreds of tabs.

After few days of usage, leaving those tabs open, I can see that the memory usage in either browser would increase. In Safari: when memory usage is 800MB and above, I can see a lag when typing in gmail, everything else other than gmail is responsive. In Chrome (same scenario), typing in gmail is smooth and everything else is also smooth.

I am using MacOS Mojave 10.14.1, 16GB RAM, 2.9Ghz Intel Core i5 (Macbook Pro 2016).
