Recently Safari has been using significant energy, even when sitting on a new tab window. Has this been happening to anyone else or is there a way to reset safari without losing saved passwords. I have deleted cookies, cache (develop menu) and history. I have 2 extensions, one being Grammarly and the other being wipr (ad block from app store). Its consistently using between 13.5 to 14 on avg energy impact, even on intensive tasks.

Also I am worried about installing a crypto mining software on accident, but malware bytes (use this because genius bar said it was good and has been for me) hasn't noticed anything.

The fans spool up when safari is open but not when adobe is open.

I suggest you log out of your regular Mac user account and log into a freshly created one. Safari extensions are user specific so you should be able to run Safari with no extensions with the newly created user.

If Safari's energy usage is considerably lower in the newly created user account, that would point to either one of the two extensions as the possible culprit.

I run Wipr on my Mac mini 2018 (Mojave 10.14.6) and I do not see any significant energy load when using Safari.

Another possibility is that you are visiting a site that is running a cryptocurrency miner when you visit the site. You will need to review each site that you regularly visit to ascertain whether or not this is the case. To assess this accurately, you will need to visit each site by itself without other tabs open and quit Safari completely before visiting a different site.

Best of luck.
