Safari V.10.0.1 (12602.2.14.0.7) in MacOS sierra problems

When I try to download an attachment - word doc from my gmail in safari it won't download. I checked that I have the safai preferences set to download to desktop So I have to use Firefox to use gmail and that does allow me to download an attachment.

Can anyone help fix this problem with Safari/gmail please?
